Self education
Most of my skills came through self education. I am constantly challenged to invent ideas that will encourage others to learn from their own experiences. The possibility for creative communitie's depends on creating the circumstances in which ideas can happen. My main objective is to offer a conduit for community activity and information, as an alternative to television and consumerism.
Skill share
I wish to set up a small publishing project. I would hope to gain the experience needed to edit and produce booklets and printed matter. Also to learn about organising the content and distribution of the material. Then to pass on my skills to others.
Getting out more
My main philosophy is based on "getting out more" connecting with the community, going for a walk, talking about and looking at things. This brings me great pleasure, costs nothing, keeps me fit and opens up the workings of the city to critical observation. There is always something to see or do if you know how and where to look.
The aim of my booklet is to encourage people to engage in the life of the city. Not just in the "art gallery" aspect but also in the projects and events that are happening in their community. The booklet will highlight a variety of ideas pertinent to community interaction, concentrating on areas that lack the infrastructure and facilities that make community life easier. The manual will also serve as a visitor guide to the city .
Interchange of ideas
As well as collecting content for the booklet, in my travels I will also be giving out information on workshops in various topics relating to "living in the city", in all corners of Glasgow.
As I go along I will be informing various groups and individuals about each others projects, thus creating an interchange of ideas and experiences. The format then could be extended to other cities to encourage an index nation wide.
Reasons for project
I am constantly questioning people I come in contact with who show interest in doing things. I am also prepared to visit various venue's to give workshops. Talking to people in community centre's and in my travels around the city, in places such as Dalmarnock, in the east end of Glasgow, where locals feel disconnected from society. Through these discussions, it leaves me with no doubt my project is relevant. People from these areas need a reference to things that acknowledge their existence in a positive sense, as well as to highlight the fact that they are not alone and that, there are others in the same circumstances in other places, willing to share creative ideas in order to enhance community life.
There are also many examples in our communities of creative work and projects, that would give encouragement and incite, if given the proper exposure and context, the incentive needed for people to do there own things. This will be the main aim of the booklet.
If you can be of any help in this endeavour, have skills to share, contacts, ideas, would like to help financially (print costs will be big) or just to offer encouragement, say hello. Contact:
