Campaigning

The city parks will not stay green and protected from commercial interests on their own. Our communities do not sustain the freedom from the encroachment and take over by business interests on their own. Our kids will not be protected from their environment being consumed by traffic and motorways by construction companies and the promise of jobs.

It is not out of the kindness of government agents that decent things happen for ordinary people. It is and is only because ordinary people intervene in the process and carry and share the responsibility for these things that they happen at all.

No one gets paid any wages for trying to make the world a better place to live, but the successes are shared by us all. We can all contribute something in the process, even if it's to donate money, but more importantly, our support, our time - no matter how little of it we can afford to give.

Who is Planning Our Future and In Whose Interest ?

Selling the river

Govanhill Baths Trust
"There is a pool in London that's actually shut and falling to bits but they're waiting until the end of the London bid for the Olympics before they actually demolish it, because you can't really bid for the Games if you're demolishing existing infrastructure."
It will be interesting to see what happens to the pool buildings in Govan, Govanhill etc. If "our" bid is successful for the commonwealth games.

Inside the Murky World of Make Poverty History
"We have a saying in the African liberation movement - 'nothing about us, without us'. Make Poverty History is a massive step backwards in this regard, even from Jubilee 2000.The campaign is overwhelmingly led by Northern NGOs and its basic message is about white millionaire pop stars saving Africa 's helpless. The political movements still fighting for liberation on the ground are completely erased". Red Pepper

Geldof's Live Shame show
Urging the G8 leaders to do more to help Africa, is like begging the same people for mercy who represent the inhuman systems. And nothing was said aloud about the origins of poverty, stopping the illegal wars or the taking of the African oil: again cheating Africa out of trillions. Indymedia

Choked over air quality
New research found pollution in Glasgow had soared by seven micrograms per cubic metre of air to 34 micro-grams since January. Hope Street in the city centre was named most polluted street in the country.

Backpark. We are still canpaigning, and have ideas to!
Up till now we have  managed to persuade over 80 people to write to the Planning Department objecting to the development. We are still encouraging people to write in to object as the reduction in the number of houses is coming from the top of the building and makes no difference at all to the overall development and is still the loss of another green space.

Meanwhile in Spodden Valley Further south from here, but no less inportant.

While we are trashing all that is unique in our Scottish towns Our countryside (Lochaber GO) is also suffering from the same blight of unimaginative destruction, and money at any cost schemes. Not only are we creating waste at home, we seem to be exporting abroad, according to a New Yorker's, take on the presentation of Scottish tourism
"In fact it was an insult to the intelligence of Americans and showed minimal concern for the greatness of Scotland."

"Its time for a breather: Traffic is one of the major problems of air pollution in Glasgow. If you run your engine unnecessarily while your vehicle is stopped at the roadside you could be fined £20." the sign says. It takes my breath away how the city Council get off with increasing traffic flow into the city, through more bridges, motorways, hotels, conference centre's, attractions, shopping complexes and so on, then ask Glaswegian's, to pay for it, both through their health and their wallets. (Laughing all the way to the cough, cough, bank)

We are being lied to.

Aceh goes to heaven! By Andre Vltchek
Aceh is bleeding and the worst may still be ahead. Those who are arriving in Aceh should know that they are not only entering a land devastated by horrific natural disaster; they are entering a territory which was brutalized and exploited for decades and which still is. It doesn't only need aid - it needs solidarity, protection, and determined long-term help; and it needs it now!
